The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (“GHG Protocol”) and the International Organization for Standardization (“ISO”) have confirmed plans to merge their corporate greenhouse gas accounting standards into one co-branded framework.
On paper, this simplifies reporting. In practice, it raises the bar for Scope 2 claims, evidence supporting market-based instruments, and proof that decarbonisation efforts are working.
The merger itself is good news: less duplication, greater consistency, and a shared reference point for regulators, assurance providers, and investors.
The complexity lies in what is being merged. The new framework will combine traditional emissions inventories, market-based accounting, and the newer Actions and Market Instruments workstream.
